Track Obsession: Move in Silence (Only Speak When It’s Time to Say Checkmate) by Lorenzo Senni

I’ve been becoming more and more a fan of hyperpop lately as the genre is starting to make its way into the mainstream and artists like Charli XCX and SOPHIE have risen to prominence using elements of it in a very digestible, catchy way.

I don’t know if everyone would classify Move in Silence (Only Speak When It’s Time to Say Checkmate) by Lorenzo Senni as hyperpop, but the industrial and glitchy sounds all throughout the track, and the fast pacing definitely remind me of the work of Iglooghost and BABii at times – two of my favorite artists in the genre. One issue my ears often have with hyperpop tracks though is they can be a bit confusing with the sometimes insane amount of sounds and textures happening all at once or in very fast succession. But it’s also a reason why I return to hyperpop tracks often because I always find new sounds and production details that I don’t catch during the first few listens.

What really draws me in to Move in Silence is the more ‘easy to follow’ song structure and while it still keeps the erraticism and glitchiness of hyperpop, it’s catchy and quotable – as much as a song with no lyrics can be quotable. There is a common thread of melody throughout the track that Lorenzo Senni manages to keep very dynamic with a range of tones that hit the ear in satisfyingly quirky ways.

Overall, it’s a dynamic, quirky, glitchy, slightly dark, industrial dance track that I’d love to hear at goth night at the sushi bar.

P.S. after a few listens I had a flashback to being a kid, playing pokemon on my game boy color and encountering a wild Geodude (the big boulder pokemon). I think at some points the song almost sounds like a combination of glitchy pokemon noises lol. I wonder if anybody has sampled pokemon noises for a song before…
